The sound is nice and clear with no static or distortion, but as a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack it leaves a lot to be desired. All of the sound is limited to the forward channels, with only the smallest amount of bleed to the rears for the music. 7 out of 10 The Audio As with many movies from the 50's and 60's that are remixed into Dolby Digital 5.1, Treasure Island doesn't really sound like a multi-channel mix. Aside from the print issues, you can't ask for a better-looking version of Disney's first attempt at a feature-length live action movie. Technicolor usually always looks great on DVD, and Treasure Island doesn't stop that trend. Things do get much better soon after that with some amazingly vibrant colors (great, rich, reds and blues), and excellent detail especially in the small designs on some of the long coats. For the first fifteen minutes or so, the print is in very bad with tons of specks and scratches.

9 out of 10 The Video The box says "Fully Restored", but judging from the first few minutes of the movie it's hard to tell exactly what they did to "restore" the film. This DVD contains that original cut, but it's now been slapped with a PG rating.

In the past, Treasure Island was shown in an edited "G-rated" version, with the uncut "unrated" original theatrical cut making a rare appearance on TV from time to time. It's a very good adaptation of the original novel that maintains the core themes and characters while at the same time making it distinctly "Disney". Yes, even after adventure movies such as the Indiana Jones films, Disney's Treasure Island remains a great pirate/adventure film with excellent locations, costumes, sets, and characters. Thanks to a great cast, and the perfect John Silver in Robert Newton, Disney crafted one of the most enjoyable adventure films of the time, and it's one that's still fun to watch. It was a risk for a studio known for cartoons, but Treasure Island succeeded with flying colors. With the release of Treasure Planet on DVD, Disney is rushing the original film out to cash-in on the futuristic remake, and unfortunately there are no extras included on the DVD. To this day it stands up well against all of the other live action classics from the studio and is one of the best adventure films from the era. Released in 1950, Disney's adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic was the studios first full-length live action movie, but it's hard to tell by looking at it. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, and others are all great movies but they wouldn't even be here if it weren't for the success of Walt Disney's Treasure Island. Disney has a very strong catalog of classic live action movies.
